Finance ministers from the world’s richest countries flew into Sydney in February for the first of many meetings leading to this year’s G20 summit in Brisbane, Australia. The G20’s long-standing commitment to phase out fossil fuel subsidies did not however make it onto the agenda. On the other hand, facilitating trillions of dollars in private infrastructure investment was central, particularly through PPPs (public private partnerships) being promoted by both the G20 and the B20. The question is what kind of infrastructure and for whose benefit? The C20 (civil society groups) were not invited.
