The Asia Pacific Greens are appalled by the assassination of Shahanawaz Pahwer in Pakistan. We extend our condolences to Shahanawaz Pahwer’s family, friends and people of Pakistan who like him also strive for social justice.
Shahanawaz Pahwer was killed by political opponents because he supported the Pakistan Green Party’s effort to lead a national government that stands for nonviolence, respect for diversity, social justice, sustainability, democracy and ecological wisdom. Mr. Pahwer’s death reflects poorly on all governments who facilitate the escalating violence in the region, impeding the peoples’ right to participate in a democratic process.
The Asia Pacific Greens call for both Pakistanis and global citizens alike to gain inspiration from Shahanawaz Pahwer’s intent by continuing to demand a politics and government that genuinely cares for all of society.
The Asia Pacific Greens call on the government of Pakistan to hold accountable the perpetrators behind this criminal act, and to ensure elections are fair and free of violence.
