Dear Asia-Pacific Greens Federation,
My name is Sharon Reid and I work for Australian Greens Senator Penny Wright. As one of our Green colleagues, I wanted to get in touch to let you know about a campaign we’re running.
We’re based in South Australia where we’re facing a battle with Canadian oil company, Bight Petroleum, who have an application before the government to conduct seismic testing off the coast of our precious, clean, green tourism destination of Kangaroo Island.
Having met with the local island community over a long period of time, we all agree that there’s too much to lose if oil and gas testing, and eventually drilling, is allowed in this unique marine environment.
So we’ve been running a campaign for a while now, raising awareness, making noise, lobbying successive Environment Ministers to agree that oil and gas is too big a risk for Kangaroo Island. We asked people to take a photo of themselves “standing” with Kangaroo Island and we’ve uploaded them in a Facebook album so more people are aware of what Bight Petroleum want to do.
The next phase of our campaign is to show that Kangaroo Island is a destination of international significance and that people all over the world want to see it protected. We’re hoping to recruit people from all corners of the globe to take photos with our Kangaroo Island signs and send them to us for use on social media. Eventually we’ll submit them to the Federal Environment Minister to demonstrate that the world is standing with Kangaroo Island in saying no to oil and gas.
I’m wondering if you, or anyone you know, would be able to support our campaign? We want to reach all corners of the globe and would love to have your involvement.
