Climate action leadership at UN Summit is Vital
Greens around the world join a global day of action on 21 September
The Global Greens call on the world’s leaders to commit personally at the UN Climate Summit to tackling climate change with the urgency and boldness needed to avoid catastrophic global warming.
The UN Climate Summit in New York City on 23 September is the first big event on the road to the UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Paris in December 2015 where a binding global climate agreement is due to be completed.
With just 15 months to the Paris COP, it’s time for governments to state what actions they are taking at home and to signal their preparedness to make public commitments (binding) not just contributions (voluntary) towards a global agreement by March 2015.
The test is whether the sum of the commitments made by the world’s governments will be big enough to avoid dangerous climate change; so far the gap is huge.
Atmospheric greenhouse gas pollution reached a record high in 2013 according to the World Meteorological Organisation underlining the urgency for the world to change direction.
The world needs action not words.
Greens around the world will be organizing and joining events on Sunday 21 September in solidarity with the ‘people’s climate march’ in New York and working in the future for as long as it takes to solve the problem of global warming.
The Global Greens call for:
- Phase out government support for fossil fuels
- Stop deforestation and degradation of natural forests and other natural ecosystems
- Energy and equity for all through shifting to 100% renewable energy so as to lift people out of energy poverty and to end nuclear power
- Meet climate finance pledges urgently with new additional grants not loans
- Provide locally appropriate adaptation measures through Green Economy policies to enable the systemic changes needed for a sustainable, resilient and prosperous society
- Commit to a binding global post-2020 agreement in Paris in 2015 with targets based on science and consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C.
Green Parties around the world tell how climate change is affecting their country and what actions they are taking to address it.
On September 21st, join the global movement for climate action at and call your governments to make the systemic changes needed to create a healthy and sustainable global society.

The march is timed to build pressure on world leaders and in support of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s Climate Solutions Summit on September 23. Negotiations for meaningful climate action – held every year since the early 1990s – are moving at a snail’s pace. Come to New York. March for climate sanity. We need you.

The Green Party has a win-win plan to protect our climate, achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and leave Kiwi families better off. Under our Climate Protection Plan, the Green Party will:
• Establish an independent Climate Commission.
• Phase out the failed Emissions Trading Scheme and instead put a meaningful price on carbon through a charge on polluters.
• Recycle all revenues raised from a carbon charge back to families through a $2,000 income tax-free band & a 1 percent company tax cut.
• Introduce a suite of complementary measures to reduce New Zealand’s emissions and make the transition to a low carbon economy.

South Korea’s Park Geun-hye administration scores zero when it comes to the willingness to scale back emissions of greenhouse gases. The Park administration evades the responsibility to address climate change by increasing nuclear power plants and losing grip on emission trading. Korea is the world’s seventh largest emitter of greenhouse gases. In other words, Korea bears a great duty in helping the international community reach a consensus to respond to post-2020 climate change. Her predecessor Lee Myung-bak declared “low carbon green growth,” but he significantly expanded nuclear power plants as an alternative to coping with climate change, and the Park administration is following suit.
President Park will reportedly join the UN Climate Summit on September 23 and “speak on the Korean government’s effort to create the economy’s new growth engine by adopting responding to climate change as a key agenda for her drive to build a creative economy.” But her speech will likely relegate to a hollow rhetoric. Green Party Korea has been releasing statements condemning the government’s policy to deal with climate change, and will vigorously partake in the Global Greens Climate Change Campaign in a bid to spark a change in the government’s policy.
