Calls for Release of Liaquat Ali Shaikh

The Asia Pacific Greens Network (APGN) requests the release by the Pakistani authorities of Mr. Liaquat Ali Shaikh, Chairperson of the Pakistan Green Party.

On September 19, 2012 Liaquat was arrested in Jacobabad City, Sindh Province, Pakistan, while overseeing the distribution of relief materials for flood-affected people.  Mr.Ajiz Jakharni is thought to have verbally ordered the arrest and no official charge has been made nor case registered against Liaquat so far.  Since the time of arrestLiaquat has had no access to communication and his exact whereabouts are unknown.  It is feared that Liaquat may be subject to physical torture during his detention.

The Asia Pacific Greens Network urgently requests the international community to take action to ensure transparency and accountability in Liaquat’s detention and the preservation of his human rights.
