Call for release of Mr Liaquat Ali Shaikh

The Global Greens (GG) today call on the Pakistan government to take all necessary steps to secure the release of Mr. Liaquat Ali Shaikh as a matter of urgency and express their grave concern at his detention.

Mr Liaquat, Chairperson of the Pakistan Green Party and a member of the Global Greens Coordination, was detained on September 19, 2012 in Jacobabad City, Sindh Province, Pakistan, while overseeing the distribution of relief materials for flood-affected people.

According to local sources, no official charge has been made nor case registered against Mr Liaquat who has been held incommunicado since being arrested and whose exact whereabouts are unknown. It appears that district authorities are responsible for Mr Liaquat’s disappearance.

The Global Greens are deeply concerned about Mr Liaquat’s situation including his arrest without charge, being held in detention without communication and without access to legal advice, and his physical condition.

We request the Pakistani government to intervene immediately to ensure Mr Liaquat’s safety and secure his release.

The Global Greens will be pursuing all avenues to obtain Mr Liaquat’s safe return to his family and colleagues.
