An Urgent Call for Peace, International Law and Regional De-Escalation
The Asia Pacific Greens Federation (APGF) views with profound alarm and unequivocal condemnation the sustained military attacks launched by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran (28 February 2026). This act of aggression which has included the extrajudicial killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, the destruction of military and civilian infrastructure, and the deaths of scores of civilians including children represents a grave violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and fundamental principles of human rights.
We further condemn the retaliatory strikes by Iranian forces that have caused civilian casualties in Israel and damage to civilian infrastructure across Gulf Cooperation Council states. This escalation risks plunging the entire Middle East and beyond into a catastrophic regional war with devastating humanitarian, environmental and geopolitical consequences
Our Position: Grounded in Law, Principle, and Humanity
- This War is illegal and unjustified
- Article 2(4) of the UN Charter prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. The United States has invoked no valid legal basis for its aggression:
- No armed attack by Iran against the United States preceded the strikes, rendering self-defense under Article 51 inapplicable.
- Regime change has no standing in international law and cannot justify war.
- The alleged threat of Iranian nuclear weapons has been repeatedly debunked by international watchdogs and the US Defense Intelligence Agency’s own 2025 assessment.
- The killing of a foreign head of state constitutes an extrajudicial assassination a war crime under international humanitarian law.
- Civilians Are Not Targets
We condemn in the strongest terms the reported attack on a school in Tehran, which killed more than 100 children. International humanitarian law is clear: civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be targets. Such acts constitute war crimes and demand accountability.
- The Middle East Does Not Need another War of Choice
History teaches us that US-led military interventions in the Middle East produce not stability, but chaos. From the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon to the 2003 Iraq War, such adventures have spawned extremism, deepened conflict, and caused immeasurable suffering. The current war will be no exception already, Hezbollah has entered the fray, Lebanon’s sovereignty is under threat, and Gulf States find themselves unwillingly drawn into the crossfire.

- The Strait of Hormuz Closure Threatens Global Stability
The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz through which 20 percent of the world’s oil passes; threatens global energy security, economic stability, and the livelihoods of millions. APGF calls on all parties to respect freedom of navigation and avoid actions that weaponize global commons.
Our Demands The APGF calls upon all parties, the United Nations, and the international community to:
- Immediate Ceasefire and De-escalation
All military operations must cease immediately. Further escalation will only bring more death, destruction, and regional destabilization.
- Return to Multilateral Diplomacy
The United Nations Security Council must urgently convene and assert its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The Geneva talks, reportedly close to a breakthrough on nuclear and missile programs, must be revived.
- Respect for International Law and Accountability
All parties must comply with international humanitarian law. War crimes including attacks on civilians and extrajudicial killings must be investigated and those responsible held to account
- Congressional and Parliamentary Action
We call upon the United States Congress to assert its constitutional authority and pass War Powers resolutions to halt unauthorized military action. We call upon parliaments worldwide to condemn this war and refuse complicity.
- Protection of Civilians and Civilian Infrastructure
All parties must take all feasible precautions to avoid civilian harm. Humanitarian access must be guaranteed and civilian infrastructure schools, hospitals, ports, airports must be protected.
- Support for Regional Sovereignty
We express solidarity with the people and governments of Lebanon, Bahrain, the UAE, and all states impacted by this conflict. Their sovereignty must be respected, and they must not be dragged into wars not of their choosing.
| A Green Vision for the Region APGF reiterates its founding conviction: peace is an ecological condition. There can be no lasting security where international law is trampled, where civilians are sacrificed, and where diplomacy is abandoned for the brutality of war. We call for: ▪Demilitarization of regional conflicts and redirection of resources to human and environmental needs. ▪Multilateralism over unilateral aggression. ▪Justice for all victims, regardless of nationality. ▪Diplomacy as the only viable path to resolving differences. The people of Iran, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, the Gulf, and across the Middle East deserve peace, security, and the right to determine their own futures free from foreign intervention, war, and occupation. This war must stop. Now. |
