Statement
Against Child Marriage
The issues facing Iraq are deeply troubling and require urgent attention and action. Physical domestic abuse, child abuse, and emotional abuse are pervasive, rooted in cultural norms that dictate that women and girls must obey men and adhere strictly to traditional lifestyles.
Facts
• Child marriage is any marriage where at least one of the parties is under 18 years.
• One in every five girls is married worldwide
The amendments to the Personal Status Law by the Iraq government potentially permit the marriage of girls as young as nine. This is a chilling development that is likely to have devastating consequences for families, communities and the region. Child spouses are more likely to face life threatening risks during pregnancy and delivery, whilst their babies are more likely to be preterm, have a low birth weight and suffer from neonatal conditions. For these reasons and more, this law change poses a significant threat to the rights and well-being of young girls in Iraq. It legitimizes child marriages, leading to increased incidences of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and emotional trauma for countless vulnerable children.
The Time For Action Is Now
• We must mobilize community leaders
• Engage with policymakers, raise awareness in our society about the urgent need
for change.
Together, we can create a safer, more equitable future for children in Iraq. Let us stand firm in our commitment to protect our children and ensure that their voices are heard and respected.
