The leader of the Australian Greens and climate champion, Senator Christine Milne, invites supporters to join the worldwide People’s Climate March this weekend. Millions of people will march around the world to pressure politicians meeting in New York to fight global warming before it’s too late.
Read her inspiring letter and attend a People’s Climate event near you – worldwide!
Dear friends,
I grew up on a dairy farm in idyllic Wesley Vale, north-west Tasmania. In the late 1980s, a pulp mill was proposed by a Canadian company that would destroy our farmland and our wilderness. So we got organised. Around kitchen tables, over back fences, on the streets and in the Parliament – it took everyone. We stopped the pulp mill.
Decades later, our challenge is so much more formidable.
The planet is on track to heat up two degrees in our lifetimes. Unless we do something the devastating fires, droughts and floods already destroying homes and lives, will be worse still.
That’s why we need the People’s Climate March on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of September to be the biggest climate mobilisation the world has ever seen. Millions will march around the world in support for ambitious action on climate change, as leaders gather in New York for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s emergency climate summit.
You can make it happen. Get your friends along and go to a People’s Climate March event near you.
Our communities are already transforming. Over a million Australian homes have gone solar, farmers and activists are fighting new coal projects and thousands are divesting from fossil fuel backing banks and super funds. Governments will back the transformation when we take the power back from the big end of town and the old parties who will say or do anything for power.
When I go back to visit I look out over the Wesley Vale district and get this tremendous sense of satisfaction. It’s just as beautiful as it ever was.
I know we can win again.
Yours,
Christine
