Global Greens remember Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster

The Chernobyl disaster is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale – the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011

Even after 28 years, the consequences of Chernobyl are far from over. The impact on health and ecology is disastrous, not only in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear plant itself, but also for the large area of radioactive contamination still existing in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Belarus is still spending significant parts of its budget on combating the consequences of this nuclear catastrophe.

About 40% of Chernobyl radiation landed on these three countries. The rest spread mostly across Europe, especially Scandinavia, and as far as in North America.

The Global Greens oppose any expansion of nuclear power and will work to phase it out rapidly, in accordance with the Global Greens Charter, Political action point 3.5.
