Dr Mehreen Faruqi is the Senator in the Australian parliament representing the state of New South Wales. The first Muslim woman elected to any Australian parliament, Senator Faruqi is a career engineer and life-long activist for social and environmental justice.
Since emigrating from Pakistan in 1992 and completing her doctorate at the University of New South Wales, Faruqi has worked as an environmental engineer for local government and as an academic. She directed the Institute of Environmental Studies at UNSW and was Associate Professor of the Australian Graduate School of Management.
Senator Faruqi was elected to NSW Parliament’s upper house in 2013 where she was spokesperson on Environment , Transport and Women. Senator Mehreen Faruqi is the Australian Greens spokesperson for Education, Industry, Housing and Animal welfare.
